Taiwan's nationality law says one must give up one's original citizenship if one wants to obtain Taiwan citizenship:
An alien who is naturalized in accordance with the provisions of Articles 3 to 7 shall submit a certificate to prove the loss of his (her) original nationality. However, this does not include cases in which responsibility for failing to obtain a certificate does not rest with the person and that the reason for failure has been verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
What is "responsibility rests with the person"?: Like not wishing to give ransom money.
The government forcing you to give up your original citizenship, and your husband "safeguarding" (confiscating) your passport: it's all the same logic.
To become a member of the Taiwanese, one carve this irreversible scar, burn this indelible brand. This nationality circumcision ceremony should be tossed in the dumpster.
No wonder most years not even 1/10000 of the U.S. residents in Taiwan dare to apply for Taiwanese citizenship. Compare that with the statistics of other groups. Compare also US Immigration statistics. Don't those who get US permanent residency also get naturalization?
So the Taiwan government must have some law, which of course on the surface looks fair, but causes effective discrimination, preventing some groups from getting their ID cards.
What a waste for both people and governments. Just makes lots of red tape, and all for what?
However the law dares not limit the number of citizenships Taiwanese themselves can have -- a double standard unique among the world's nationality laws.
And there is even a unique upside-down mutuality clause 國籍法第九條: 互惠之相反 if the immigrant to Taiwan's original country allows dual citizenship, Taiwan doesn't. But if it doesn't, Taiwan does!
So the best one can do is be a "first class second-class citizen": get Taiwan's Permanent Resident card.
What if the U.S. Congress made a retaliatory law directed at the much more numerous Taiwanese immigrants to the USA, asking them to give up their Taiwanese citizenship. A taste of Taiwan's own medicine. I wonder what 台灣人公共事務會(FAPA) 會怎看 would have to say?
If one gives up one's original citizenship and wishes to visit one's parents, one must apply for a visa. And what if one does not qualify? You'll never see them again!
But if one does not give up their original citizenship, one cannot inherit leases or titles to some classes of property: lose your home!
"making it illegal to discriminate against people based on nationality 以國籍歧視... the government will no longer have this excuse to deport non-nationals who take part in assemblies or public demonstrations... scrap regulations dating back to the martial law era ... These rules make a mockery of the fact that many Taiwanese possess citizenship of other countries "
...without discrimination of any kind as to race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. ( 台灣欲入聯合國 Taiwan wants to join the UN.)

Give me dual nationality or give me none.
I have an idea for a protest. It involves sacrificing myself, Dan Jacobson, in an effort to get the Taiwan legislators to repeal the dual nationality restriction, Article 9.
The idea is that I would go thru the usual procedure to acquire Taiwan nationality: first give up original nationality, then apply and receive Taiwan nationality. However, I would quit in the middle, refusing to take the second step of acquiring Taiwan nationality.
I would refuse to acquire Taiwan nationality all the way till the day the legislators finally repeal the dual nationality restriction, so nobody ever again has to give up their original nationality in order to acquire Taiwan nationality.
Yes, when it is all over I would have 1 Taiwan nationality and 0 USA nationality.
As the above involves me enduring possibly many years of having no nationality at all, what is the worst thing that could happen to me? I am currently a Taiwan Permanent Resident.
Could the Taiwan authorities kick me out of the country? That is my Achilles Heel, because my whole protest idea is based on me being able to do this in a leisurely way, i.e., no detention or deportation.
Indeed, having no more US citizenship should hopefully protect me against deportation to the US: they wouldn't take me... Oops, that's not what happened to the thousands of brides, back in Vietnam but stateless.
Oh well, that is all the ideas I have come up with so far.
