In Taiwan there is an argument about romanization on roadsigns.
Road sign romanization: use Hanyu Pinyin.
(This is the same as the "single textbook version for a single curriculum" issue: one Pinyin worldwide, to reduce everybody's burden.)
Hanyu Pinyin for all levels of place names: Taipei=>Taibei, Kaohsiung=>Gaoxiong
And the only way you can prevent public servants and the general public from misspelling Hanyu Pinyin is to have them know it, just like math. And that is accomplished by teaching it in school, if not instead of Bopomofo, then sometime before graduation at least.
